Species & Seasons
Fishing on Vancouver Island is highly seasonal, with different species peaking at different times of year. While conditions and regulations can vary, the following provides a general overview of what is typically available throughout the season.
Chinook (King) Salmon
Season: May to September
Chinook salmon are available throughout the entire Port Renfrew season and can provide consistent fishing opportunities from spring through early fall. While Chinook fishing is generally good all season long, the best fishing typically occurs from late May to early September, with quality fish present throughout the summer. Chinook Salmon typically average 10-20 pounds but can occasionally exceed 40 pounds.
Coho (Silver) Salmon
Season: Mid July to mid September
Coho salmon typically arrive later in the season, with fishing improving steadily through late July. August and September are the peak months for Coho, offering fast action and excellent opportunities. Coho Salmon typically average 4-12 pounds.
Pacific Halibut
Season: May to September
Halibut fishing is strongest earlier in the season. The peak time for Pacific halibut is typically May and June, and fishing usually remains strong through early August, depending on conditions and seasonal openings. Halibut typically average 15-50 lbs but can occasionally exceed 100 pounds.
Lingcod
Season: May to September
Lingcod are available throughout the Port Renfrew season. There is no single peak period, and good fishing opportunities exist from spring through early fall. Lingcod typically average 8-15 pounds but can occasionally exceed 30 lbs.
Dungeness Crab
Season: May to early July
Dungeness crab fishing is best earlier in the season, with the peak typically occurring from May to early July.
Winter (Feeder) Chinook
Season: December to April
Winter Chinook salmon begin arriving in late fall and remain in local waters throughout the winter and spring, with peak fishing from December through April. They typically average 4–10 pounds but can occasionally reach 15-20 pounds.
